In recent years , more and more people have started explore growing their own produce again. Here we give 5 reasons why you might consider starting your own kitchen garden.

- Freshness

Fruit and vegetables taste better and are healthier if eaten as soon as possible after picking. Most fruit you buy from supermarkets and the like is picked well before it is properly ripe, to extend shelf life, and this usually has an impact on flavour. Growing your own lets you taste the freshest possible produce as it’s meant to taste.

- Quality

Commercially grown crops are often selected for their high yields, uniform appearance and long shelf lives rather than for quality and taste. When you grow your own, you can concentrate on the quality rather than the economics.

- Price

Much supermarket fresh produce is hugely overpriced, despite their advertising claims. Growing your own from seed is about as inexpensive as you can get, and even growing from small plants you buy is likely to provide you better food at a lower cost. With many plants, you can use the seed from one growing season to provide plants for the next – a self sustaining cycle that will cost you only time and effort to keep going.

- Provenance

More and more people have concerns about how our food is produced, with chemical pesticides and GM food a particular worry. With your own vegetable patch, you know exactly where your food is from and how it was grown.

- Variety

There are literally thousands of different varieties of fruit and vegetables, but supermarkets tend to concentrate on only the most profitable and easy to sell. This means that our choice is often limited to a few select varieties of apple, for example, rather than the hundreds of traditional kinds that exist. Growing your own lets you pick the varieties you like the most, and experiment to find new ones you’ll rarely see on sale.

There is of course a downside to all this – it takes time and effort. In these increasingly busy times, we might not think we have the time to spare, but starting small with a few herb plants on your windowsill, or even the odd tomato plant, will give you a taste of growing your own and might even be enough to hook you into it for life!

Hibiscus plants are popular in gardens and flower arrangements, since the plants produce astonishingly beautiful flowers on a tall stem. You can choose between wide range of different Hibiscus colours, including the popular red, pink, orange, violet, lavender, yellow and white variants. A Hibiscus flower can reach a size of 4-15 centimetres across and is equipped with five petals. Hibiscus leaves are toothed or lobed and have a deep green shade.

Hibiscus plants will require quite a lot of light, and a majority of the Hibiscus species origins from warm regions of the world. Most Hibiscus species will prefer to be planted where the temperature ranges from 60 to 90 degrees F during most parts of the day. These plants are tougher than many other tropical and subtropical species and will usually survive quite low temperatures as long as they are not prolonged. A cold night can for instance make the plant shed its leaves and buds, but it will survive and eventually begin to form new leaves and buds. You can keep a Hibiscus plant in areas where the temperatures drop below 50 degrees F, but these Hibiscuses will rarely flower. When it does flower, the blossoms will typically be very small and sometimes look a little weird. In a cold climate, you should not give your Hibiscus too much water since this will increase the risk of fungal infections. Temperatures below the freezing point should always be avoided.

If you take care of your Hibiscus, it will begin to produce buds. Hibiscus buds are typically big and tight. Unfortunately, Hibiscus buds are often attacked by worms and insects that can kill the entire bud. When the buds open up and begin to blossom, you can protect them from parasite attacks by regularly spraying them with water.

You can make the Hibiscus flowers last longer by providing them with water and protect them from severe heat. Heavy downpour can harm Hibiscus flowers. If the Hibiscus plant is exposed to temperatures above 95 degrees F, it can begin to drop its buds. This can sometimes be prevented by giving your Hibiscus plant a lot of water and creating some type of shade for it. The plant itself will have no problem surviving temperatures above 100 degrees F as long as it does not become dehydrated.

Pruning your Hibiscus is recommended since Hibiscus plants tend to produce flowers on their new shoots. You can cut off shoots and use in flower arrangements, but they will usually last no longer than 24 hours. If you cut off an almost opened bud you can protect it in the refrigerator until its time to use it.

Hibiscus plants needs a lot of minerals to do well, including manganese, iron and copper. Giving them some form of flower nutrition or fertilizer is therefore a good idea. Ask your florist for more specified instructions regarding your particular soil and Hibiscus species.

Integrated pest management is a system that combines biological, cultural, physical and chemical strategies to control pests. In plain English, that means using the easiest, least environmentally harmful, cheapest methods first and using more expensive, toxic methods only as a last resort.

Careful observation or crop monitoring is the first and most important step in IPM. You have to know exactly what pest you’re dealing with, when it appears, how many you have and on what plants. For example, after you can recognize aphids, you may find them on a few rose buds on a single plant in the front lawn or covering every bush in your prize-winning garden. It may be the beginning of your gardening system or near the end. How you choose to control the aphids – or whether you choose to control them at all – depends on all these factors and more.

Integrated pest management strategies are like a series of steps. The first steps are the least toxic and the least harmful control methods. The most potentially toxic controls are last resort steps.

Cultural control: Giving plants optimal growing conditions – soil fertility, water, light and freedom from competing weeds – is the key to this first step. Other good cultural practices include using pest- and disease-resistant varieties and crop rotation, which means moving particular crops to new parts of the garden each year.

Crop sanitation: Keeping pests and diseases out of the garden in the first place is more than half the battle won. Inspecting new plants, cleaning your tools, eliminating weeds and using best watering practices help prevent the spread of potential problems.

Mechanical control: Prevent pests from getting on your plants by covering them with special fabrics or using hot water, air fire and the heat of the sun to kill them without poisons. Simply knocking pests into a can of soapy water does the trick, too.

Biological control: Every pest has a natural control, whether it’s predator or disease. You can buy and release many of these control organisms or encourage the ones that already exist around your garden.

Chemical control: As a last resort, apply the least toxic pesticides. The best ones target only the pest and don’t affect the innocent bystanders, such as bees, spiders and other beneficial insects. These pesticides also don’t hang around in the environment where they can continue to affect other organisms long after their use.

Agriculture is a very important activity for the survival of human beings on this earth. This is clearly reflected in the very basic fact that agriculture is one of the oldest activities of humankind. As the most profound resource, agriculture provides food, clothing and shelter to human. Agriculture not only supports humans for their subsistence, but helps a large number of industries too. Agriculture forms the raw material for numerous farm products based industries. The basic products, resulting from agricultural activities, are processed in big factories, before the final product is marketed. As such, agriculture generates employment, both for people working in the farming sector as well as those in the industrial, agriculture-based sector.

These days, agriculture has become an important commercial activity. A variety of crops are grown, which can be classified as: Food crops,Commercial crops,Fiber crops, Beverage crops. Agriculture has benefited a great deal from the various advancements in the field of science and technology – with modern machines making the ‘field’ jobs much easier than ever before. All over the world, agriculture is managed efficiently with the help of modern farm equipment. In the US, farmers rely much more on technology than on manual labor.

Machines are used for all important farm operations like – tilling, sowing, harvesting, sorting of fruits, etc. Most farmers prefer employing those laborers who are skillful, and who can operate upon their tractors, combines and harvesters. In fact, farmers are also ever so ready to try out every new development in the variety of crops, pesticides, fertilizers and the like. The importance of agriculture also lies in the fact that it supports the export sector also – most of the farmers in the United States produce largely for exports, as the soil produce is quite fertile, and coupled with modern technology, the returns are huge. Some of the major farm products are crops like rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, jute, tea, coffee and rubber- which are produced in most parts of the world.

In countries that export surplus farm output, agriculture is all the more significant, and the agricultural production is fairly high. As the farmer gets a good profit, his financial position, especially in developed countries, is better than many other entrepreneurs. He is now able to purchase the latest machinery, use latest techniques of farming, buy new and improved hybrid varieties of seeds, and use the best fertilizers to increase productivity. Nowadays, there are improvements in wholesale marketing as well as transportation of farm products. The use of refrigeration systems and efficient rail transport has made possible the safe delivery of perishable farm products like dairy products, vegetables, and fruits.

The agricultural sector plays an important role in the sphere of providing large scale employment to people. Large and moderately large farms employ workers to undertake the various jobs relating to cultivation of crops and care of farm animals. Agriculture is not just limited to crop cultivation, dairy farming has become an indispensable part of the agricultural process. Dairy farming is the practice of farming in which cattle are kept for milk and milk products. Oftentimes, poultry is also included. In fact, the scope of agriculture has widened, with interrelated sectors over-lapping one another; and in the present scenario, each of these sectors is as important as any other! Today, the importance of agriculture lies in the fact that it is practiced both for subsistence as well as commercial reasons!

The floriculture is a dynamic, fast-growing industry happening on a global scale. Floriculture is one of the major industries in many developing and underdeveloped countries. Floriculture as an industry began in the late 1800s in England, where flowers were grown on a large scale on the vast estates. The countries with the biggest flower-growing industry are The Netherlands, Kenya, Colombia, and Israel, but many other nations such as The Philippines, Malaysia, South Africa, and Ecuador are joining the market and investing in the industry. Although most of them grow the bestselling flowers – roses, tulips, sunflowers, carnations, iris, daisies, orchids, lilacs, and lilies – many are starting to explore hybrids and other indigenous crops.

Essentially, there are three branches that make up the basic structure of the floriculture. The grower is the one who grows the flowers; the wholesaler, who is the middleman between the grower and the seller; and the retailer, which is your local flower shop. Quite often, these three branches are intermingled. Some retail florists such as Island Rose in the Philippines grow their own flowers in greenhouses and sell the product straight to the market. They work as the grower, the wholesaler and retailer. Major flower companies sell flowers in such large quantities that they order directly from the grower, omitting the middleman.

When flowers are ordered from a wholesaler or a grower, they take various routes to the buyer, depending on the flower type, the area where they are grown, and how they will be sold. Some floriculturists cut and pack flowers right at the nurseries and send them directly to the buyer through mail. Some flowers are sent to a packing company that grades them and organizes them into bunches to deliver through mail or to send directly to supermarkets or flower shops. Some growers grade and sleeve the flowers themselves before selling them to wholesale markets. The wholesalers then sell the flowers to florists who prime and arrange the flowers for their customers. If you know where to go, you can buy flowers at wholesalers even if you aren’t a florist.

The floriculture works like a simple value chain: growers grow flowers, suppliers obtain them, then the flowers are sold to retailers or to wholesalers before consumers buy them in bunches or bouquets. There are different kinds of careers open in the floriculture. Among the entry-level occupations are floral shop helpers, who perform various duties in a flower shop; delivery people, who deliver flowers right to the home of the flower shop’s customers; floral designers, who make creative arrangements out of the flowers for events such as weddings, birthdays, or funerals; and salespersons, who sells fresh cut flowers and other flower-related goods at the shop. Mid-level occupations include the assistant manager, who is responsible for coordinating sales, design, delivery, and taking charge of the office.

Food manufacturing in the US has always been about convenience, product availability, taste and price. The more society ventured away from the family garden and kitchen, the more food manufacturers developed a market or niche for their products at home in the cupboards. Processed foods no longer are limited to flour and sugar on the country store shelf, but have evolved to include the variety of foods eaten daily and taken from restaurants, grocery stores, super markets and convenience stores.

As the popularity of processed foods have increased throughout the world, health problems such as obesity and diabetes have also become very common to the point that “1 in 3 American people have an Insulin Resistance, a pre-diabetic condition”.

Parents today are educating there children about nutrition, especially with regards to growing children. If foods that increase calcium production are consumed on a regular basis now, then maybe 10 or 20 years from now people wont suffer from Osteoporosis or Colon Cancer. If foods are eaten today that keep the blood sugar steady and absorb slowly in the gut, not only will the child have protection from disease, but they will have a less chance of developing diabetes twenty years from now also.

Today, people are far more informed on nutrition as it is widely broadcast through media, commercials, news, talk shows, magazine and newspaper articles.

High protein, low-carb and low-fat diets have gained popularity through the media and on celebrity books, university studies, restaurant menus and nutritional labels.

Vegetables are healthy and should be eaten regularly. It is nice to grow vegetables by yourself and eat them. But the question arises as to how to grow vegetables. We shall further see some tips and hints on how to grow vegetables.

If you are thinking on how to grow vegetables in the house then it is not very difficult. Growing vegetables requires a lot of sunlight. So it is necessary to see that your garden does get sufficient sunlight. Start from the spring season. It is always better to have a vegetable garden close to the kitchen. This way you have easy access into the garden that would provide faster cooking. The seeds need to be soaked and require moisture. Once they are a little plump they are ready to be grown. Some vegetables like cabbage and broccoli do not require you to soak their seeds. Over doing the soaking the process could cause harm to the seeds. Do not leave them overnight.

Thinking of how to grow vegetables in the cold then you will have to utilize tepees that are filled with water around the vegetables that are gentle. There are certain plastic sheets that are available in the market which acts as a barrier to the plant once water is filled. Sun can also easily pass through this sheet so that the plants stay warm later.

Wondering how to grow vegetables that are leggy then, you should be planting them deep inside. If you have planted them inside the house then they may grow a little awkward and tumble in the garden. So if it is more deeply sown then they get more support. Tomatoes require to be planted horizontally in the trench. This is not necessary to be sown deep in the soil. It would grow well without it itself.

Try to avoid cutworms that spoil gentle and tender plants. When planting vegetable plants always try to put them vertically, this would save some place. Vegetables like cucumber, beans, melons etc. can be left to go on trees or pillars rather than spreading them across. All the vegetables require fertilizers timely. So do take care that you take good care of them. This would ensure that they keep giving vegetables at regular intervals.

Cucumbers and melons can easily grow in compost. Any kind of remaining food and fruits can be thrown into them. They would act as manure and see that the vegetable grows well. This is the best way to grow such vegetables.
