Cleaning of Seeds – The Process

Pre conditioning and Pre – cleaning

The seed which will be graded or treated needs to be properly cleaned and conditioned. The seed appendages and the other materials need to be removed from it. You can do this in your farm by using equipments like scalpers.

Basic seed cleaning

When you have completed the pre cleaning, you need to clean them once more. This is known as basic cleaning. In this step, the broken and the rotten seeds are also removed, in addition to any impurities which have been missed in the first step.

Basic principles of seed cleaning

The seed size and the weight are considered for the cleaning of the seeds in the cleaning equipment. However, the basic principles which are used are aspiration, scalping and grading.

Aspiration of the seeds refers to the process in which light and chaffy seeds are removed from the group. This can be done by blowing them with the air blower and also the light dust and straw which are present.

Scalping refers to the process in which the particles which are larger than the seed size are screened out and they are separated in a vessel.

The grading of seeds means arranging them according to the size and quality. It can be done by dropping the small seeds through a hole and keeping the larger one on top. This helps in their proper handling and helps prevent wastage.

Equipments used for cleaning of seeds

The most common equipment which is used for the seed cleaning is air screen cleaner. The screen cleaners function similar to the blower but with a little difference. In the screen cleaners there are four levels which are used to screen seeds of four different sizes and separate them. The aperture size is specified for each crop in order to filter or screen better and the sizes can be changed if required.
